Seven Card Stud Rules
If Seven-Card Stud poker was to be generally
classified, it would be called a stud poker game, for
there are several versions of stud poker. One of the
first was five-card stud poker, which first showed up
amidst the American Civil War, and later evolved into
the more popular version known today as seven-card stud
poker.
Like other poker games with multiple betting rounds,
seven-card stud is governed by minimum and maximum
bets. There are five betting rounds in a game, with the
minimum stake amount usually going towards the first two
rounds - and the maximum stake going toward the third,
fourth and fifth rounds (Some games include a
medium-sized stake to cover the middle betting rounds).
-
Unlike Omaha or Texas Holdem, there are no blind
bets in a game of seven-card stud poker. Rather, each
game begins with every player putting an ante (a small
predetermined wager) into the pot.
-
When all antes are made, each player is dealt two
face-down cards and a single upturned card, also
called the "Door" or "Third Street" (since it is the
players third dealt card) The player with lowest
ranked "Door" card is required to put down the first
bet, also called the "Bring-In Bet", which is the
tables minimum stake. Door cards with equal value are
ranked according to suit. From highest to lowest, the
suit order is Spades, Hearts, Diamonds and Clubs.
Action begins with the player to the left of the
"Bring-In Bet", with all players having the option of
folding, calling or raising no more than the minimum
stake.
-
Fourth Street is the next stage of the game, which
consists of a second face-up card being dealt to each
player (making a total of four cards per hand).
-
The hand with the highest two cards showing will
begin the betting round by checking or betting. All
subsequent players (in clockwise order) have the
option of calling, raising, or folding. Any player
who has a pair showing at this stage in the game, has
the option of making a double bet. The stake size is
the table minimum, but, with a double bet the stake,
in essence, will be the table maximum. If a player
following a double bet chooses to raise, they must do
so at the same amount as the double bet.
-
Fifth Street is next, and consists of another
face-up card being dealt to each player. Again, the
highest showing hand will begin the betting round.
-
The betting round begins with either the action of
checking or betting, now at the maximum stake amount.
All players in turn follow the same rules as the
previous betting round.
-
Sixth Street brings a third face-up card to all
remaining players, giving all hands a total of six
cards.
-
The fourth betting round begins with the player
showing the highest hand. The stake size is still at
its maximum.
-
Seventh Street or the "River" is the next phase of
the game, and consists of a seventh card (face down)
being dealt to all remaining players. In situations
where the dealer will run out of cards before dealing
all River cards to each player, one face-up community
card will be placed in the center of the table and
serve as the River card for all players.
-
The fifth and final betting round ensues with
maximum wagers, followed by the showing of all hands
to determine the highest ranking five-card hand.
Seven-card stud is by far the most popular stud poker
game online; However, as I mentioned before, there are
many varieties of stud poker. Some of these include
Chicago Stud, Mississippi Stud, Mexican Stud, Baseball
Stud, Razz, Six and Five Card, Cowpie and Auction Stud
Poker.
