Tips For Gambling at Online Poker Tournaments One of the biggest draws of internet poker is the connectivity of countless
players in high-profile tournaments guaranteeing thousands, hundreds of
thousands, and sometimes millions in jackpot totals. The game of poker itself
would not be near as popular as it currently is if it were not for the
tournament structures surrounding the game.
For instance, the first year the
World Series of Poker started was in 1972, which had a $10,000 buy-in, an
$80,000 grand prize, and a total of eight tournament entrants. The final
tournament for 2005 also had a $10,000 buy-in, but with over 23,000 entrants and
a prize pool of nearly $53,000,000 being distributed to 560 players. And
in 2006, the grand prize jackpot went for $12 million to a single player. The
obvious reason why there has been such a rise in prize amounts is that there are
more poker players entering tournaments. Therefore, just like progressive
slot machines, with a larger payout comes less better odds.
There are actually
many poker players who prefer ring games to tournaments, but end up playing in
the tournament circuits anyways because they are fun and do offer an opportunity
to win big sums, even though the odds are of doing so are huge. While poker is
definitely a game of skill, when the same skill level is found amongst several
players at the same table, it is the factor of luck which usually presides over
the final outcome.
To insure you are exercising the greatest degree of
skill in your poker tournament gambling, you will need to be aware of a few more
demanding factors than you would normally need to be aware of when playing ring
online poker games. The first consideration is how you handle and play your
chips. In tournament poker, the chips should not be valued on an
equivalent basis. In other words, in ring games, one's poker chips should all be
valued the same, whereas in tournaments, your first five-hundred chips should
have more value and importance than your second batch of five-hundred chips. The
reason is that in tournament play you cannot buy back in when you run out of
chips. On the contrary, you always need chips to survive. In the earlier
stages of tournament action it is important to be weary of going all-in, while
if you manage to stay alive into the later tables, it is important to be willing
to get your chips into the pot, for if you don't you risk being blinded away by
players with massive chip counts.
An even more important skill poker players should
be exercising in tournament action is a dominant playing style. Since the blinds
get so high in later games, many players will have no other choice but to go
all-in before the Flop. Rather than doing so with a weak hand, play dominantly
when you have a hand that is dominant to begin with. This is where many players
get misguided, because a low pocket pair should not be played as a dominant
hand. A player may be able to get away with stealing a blind with this hand, but
when playing against experienced and skilled players, you will likely be called,
which time you will have a 50/50 chance of winning the hand. Rather, stick to
high pocket pairs or an Ace with a good kicker when playing dominantly at later
tables of poker tournaments.
