Omaha Hi/Lo Rules

Omaha Hi/Lo, also called Omaha 8, is a split pot poker game with a Hi and Low pot respectively. The highest ranking poker hand wins the Hi pot, while the lowest qualifying poker hand wins the Lo pot.  In order for a hand to qualify as a low, all cards composing it must fall between an Ace and an Eight.  The player with the lowest "high card" wins.  In other words, an Ace,2,4,5,6 beats an Ace,2,4,4,7 since a high card of six is lower than the seven high card. If two hands have the same high card, the lower of the second highest cards wins.

Now that the rules governing the qualification of the pots and ranking of the hands are set forth, a player should know the structure of the game.

  • All Omaha Hi/Lo games begin with blind bets.  The two players to the left of the player who holds the dealer button (which incidentally, is exchanged in a clockwise rotation each new game) are responsible for these bet stimulators.  The player to the immediate left of the dealer button pays the small blind in the amount of half the minimum stake for the game, while the other player pays the big blind in the amount of the minimum stake in full.

  • Players are dealt four face-down cards each, after which, the player seated to the left of the player who made the Big Blind either matches the big blind with a call, folds their hand, or, raises the bet (no more than three per round) in an amount no greater than the big blind (minimum wager). All other players follow suit in order, until the first betting round is completed.

  • After the first round, three community cards are turned over.  This is known as the Flop, and precedes the second betting round.  Beginning with the player who posted the small blind, action in the form of a check, bet, raise or fold must be initiated (The remainder of betting rounds will begin with the same player).  Players can check or bet if no new wager has been made in the current betting round yet. After the first bet has been made, all following players can either fold, check or raise.

  • After the second betting round, the "Turn" or "Fourth Street" is carried out.  This is the addition of a fourth, face-up community card, hence the name Fourth Street.  (Every time an action in a poker game is referred to as a Street, the number of turned community cards designates the number "Street" it is)

  • The third betting rounds ensues after the "Turn", beginning with the player to the left of the dealer button.  This time the bet and raise stake is doubled to the maximum betting amount, which will remain in place until the end of the game.

  • The last community card is revealed after all players have made their action, and is known as the "River" or "Fifth Street".  The last round of betting takes place as soon as the card is turned.

  • After the fourth and last betting round, all hands are revealed, with the highest ranking five-card poker hand winning the pot.  An important thing to remember is that three of the five community cards must be played with two of the original four cards initially dealt to each player.  As for the hi and lo hands, the same card can be twice - once toward each hand.
