Meeting the Play-Through on Casino Promotions
by Colby Lewis, Strategy and Games Writer

In keeping with the theme of our last tip regarding online casino bonuses, the following is a more detailed explanation exactly how the wager requirement (play-through) applies to cashing out the bonus and how certain games contribute different percentages of stake amounts used to meet the wager requirement.

Let's say you have received a 100% Match Bonus of $200 - entailing you have deposited $200 and have a total of $400 to gamble with. With an average wager requirement of 30x, the bonus + deposit amount would have to be gambled thirty times over before the $200 of the bonus money could be cashed out. Therefore, the full amount needed to be played through in the casino would be $400 x 30 = $12,000. Granted there are some online casinos that will allow players to cash out portions of the bonus as the wager requirement is steadily met.

Using our above example, if you had reached the point of gambling $6,000 of your original deposit and bonus money, you would be halfway to the point of meeting the entire wager requirement. Therefore, at a pro-rated value, you should be able to cash out half your bonus ($100) which some casinos will let you do, but at the cost of forfeiting the remainder of your bonus.

In regards to game specific conditions of the bonus, these too will effect the rate at which the bonus wager requirement is being met. For example, let us say that in the terms and conditions of the bonus, slots count 100% towards meeting the wager requirement. That means for every $1 bet on the slot machines, $1 goes toward meeting the wager requirement. Our above example of playing through $12,000 corresponds to games which count 100% towards meeting the 30x wager requirement.

For other games that have a lower House Edge, they will contribute a smaller percentage to the play through and will therefore require the player to gamble more money. For instance, let's say the game of roulette counts 50% towards meeting the wager requirement. Therefore, if $12,000 corresponds to a 100% play-through rate, it would take $24,000 (twice as much) in roulette bets, which contribute 50% to the play-through.

Most online casinos offer bonus accounts to players, which automatically tabulate how much of the wager requirement is being met. The software automatically calculates the percentage of bet amounts going towards the wager requirement depending on the game being played. Players can normally view the status of their bonus redemption at any time and get a good approximation as to when they will be able to cash out the full amount and truly get their hands on "free" bonus money.
