The Symmetry of Craps Odds
A good way to memorize the odds of the various dice
rolls at the craps table is to note the symmetry on
a chart that shows how many times each number can be
rolled with two die.
You will notice that all of the dice rolls are
balanced off of the number 7, which is testament to
why 7 has the best odds of being rolled the most.
You should note that each corresponding pair of
numbers below and above the 7 have the same exact
odds of being rolled.
For instance, both the 6 and 8 have a 5 in 36
chance of being rolled, the 5 and 9 each have a 1 in
9 chance of being rolled, the 4 and 10 have a 1 in
12 chance and so on. By memorizing these five
symmetrical pairs (2-12, 3-11, 4-10, 5-9, 6-8), it
is far easier to know how likely the odds are of
rolling one of the eleven possible value outcomes.
To actually determine the odds of winning a
particular wager at the craps table, having the dice
roll odds memorized is mandatory fare. For
instance, if you want to determine the odds of
winning on the come out roll, you will need to know
that a 7 can be rolled 6 out of 36 ways, and an 11
can be rolled 2 out of 36 ways. This obviously
adds up to 8 out of 36, which can be reduced to 3.5
to 1 odds of winning the come out.
