Always Keep Your Opponents Guessing at the Poker Table
by Colby Lewis, Strategy and Games Writer

In our previous online casino gambling tip we gave some advice to intermediate poker players on two general fundamentals of poker playing - playing with at least a bankroll fifty times the size of the maximum table stake and folding the majority of one's dealt hands. We are now going to offer a little more insight into that strategic aspect of poker which takes more skill than simply knowing the right cards to fold.

We have all probably heard about the "art of bluffing". Well, that is not what we are going to talk about now, although you could say it is along the same lines. Not to go so far as to say exactly when it is the right time to bluff or not (a good measure would be to only bluff when there is a very low chance of being called), we can tell you that it is very important to keep your opponents guessing about what your holding, for the second that a sharp and savvy player has you pinned, you are doomed.

And in order to keep your opponents guessing, you need to be unpredictable. Not that you should go against your gut instincts, being unpredictable essentially entails not acting on every hand the same exact way. For instance, we know that we should fold the majority of our hands. However, if you are consistently folding all of your non-playable hands immediately after the Flop (first betting round), other players will tag you with that pattern. Therefore, when it comes time to bluff on a hand that you would normally fold, your opponents are going to be that much more likely to successfully call you out. Sure, if you actually had a strong hand, this would be in your advantage. However, the more doubt you give to your opponents, the better.

Using our current example, try holding out to the Turn every so often with a hand that you are not too excited about from the get go. By mixing it up, you might even cause other players to fold early and leave the pot for the taking. And you never know what cards will come up on the Turn itself. However, just like a bluff, do not overuse your freedom to be unpredictable. Bluffs are best used when there is a low chance of being called.

In the same vein as chasing after losses when playing online casino games, if you are trying to bluff your way out of a hole, things can get dangerous. Remember, when gambling in traditional online casinos, it is always best to manage your money wisely. Poker room casinos are no different.
