Caribbean Stud is probably the most popular casino table
game offering a side-bet progressive jackpot. At online
casinos, the progressive Caribbean Stud jackpot often
surpasses the one-hundred thousand mark, thus making it
one of the highest paying table games on the Web. And when
the jackpot reaches the $263,000 mark, the Casinos Edge
actually turns into the Player's Edge.
However good this
sounds, players
should keep in mind that no matter how high the
progressive jackpot grows at Caribbean Stud Poker, it will
always be a game for jackpot hunters, rather than a game
for percentage players. A Royal Flush, which is the the
only hand that will pay the full progressive jackpot, will
be drawn about once for every 646,000 hands - no matter
the size of the jackpot.
Using optimized strategy,
Caribbean Stud will deliver a House Edge of 5.22% on the
ante bet by itself and a 2.7% edge on the ante-bet
combination.
A hand of Caribbean Stud begins with each
player making an ante bet and being dealt five facedown
cards. The dealer is also dealt five cards - four facedown
cards and one upturned card. Note that players do not
compete against one another. Like the game of Blackjack,
the dealer's hand is paired against each player's
individual hand. After each player has looked their hand
over, they must decide to either fold the hand and lose
the Ante bet or stay in the game and make a call bet,
which is for twice the amount of the ante bet.
At this
stage, the dealer will turn over the four facedown cards.
If the dealer's hand does not qualify, the player wins. If
the dealer's hand "qualifies", meaning it has an Ace-King
or better, the player's hand is compared to the dealer's
hand according to standard poker hand rankings.
Regarding
the progressive jackpot, which is available at most online
casino sites, players must make a $1 side bet before the
cards are dealt. The progressive bet wins money if the
player hits one of five hands - Flush, Full House, 4 of a
Kind, Straight Flush or Royal Flush.
