Summary of Positive Behaviors in the Online Poker Room
by Mike Harrison, Strategy and Games Writer

Lately, we have been discussing at length many of the factors that contribute to achieving financial success at online casinos and poker rooms. Not just conjecture, all of these factors are now backed with empirical evidence thanks to the 2006 eCOGRA Global Online Gambler Survey and corresponding report.

Overall, the report shows there are more factors that contribute to financial success for internet poker players than there are for online casino gamblers. While some of these factors attribute to positive gains in all forms of gambling, many of them specifically apply to playing poker.

The survey shows that poker layers who reported winning more money were more likely to not chase after losses, play at more poker sites, listen to music while playing poker, play at multiple tables simultaneously (no more than four), play with a smaller percentage of their bankroll (2% to 10% is the optimum range), play to win money (not for entertainment), play more often, view poker as a game of skill and think of their self as a skillful player.

It should be noted that many of these factors are directly associated with one another and serve to fuel the positive outcomes derived from each. For instance, it makes sense that a player who is winning more often than not would be encouraged to play more often. This does not mean that a player will necessarily continue to win more often, thus giving credence to other factors contributing to overall success in the online poker room.

Considering the fact that poker is indeed a game of skill and chance, it is thought that one of the most active contributors to financial gain is the motivation to gamble for financial reasons, which is also a contributing factor to financial success for online casino gamers. It goes to show that poker should be played with a sound strategy at all times.

The survey, however, is thought to be affected by a psychological phenomenon known as "attributional bias", in which players who win more often will attribute their good fortune to skill, even though luck may have been the largest factor. The survey concluded that more research into this area should be undertaken in future surveys and studies.

Lastly, in addition to not having to face a Casinos Edge, poker players also have the luxury of playing with very small stakes, thus contributing to less financial losses. The one phenomenon that appears to go against the favor of poker players, however, is the act of pretending to be another gender, which apparently 12% of poker players do.
