How Motivation and
Behaviour Effect Gambling Success

One of the most interesting conclusions to be derived from
eCOGRA's global gaming survey, which incidentally, is
significantly
insightful and valuable in so far as the player should be
concerned, are the seemingly common factors in
achieving financial success when gambling online.
Overall, survey results show that players who played
internet poker claimed to have garnered more winnings than
online casino gamblers did. While less than one third of
poker gamblers said they lost money on a consistent
monthly basis, twice as many casino gamblers said they
lost money fairly consistently. Although these findings
are not deemed to be scientifically accurate, they do shed
some light on the nature of these two forms of internet
betting and corresponding player mentalities.
Games
offered at online casinos are more subject to chance than
poker, which most gamblers know has more elements of skill
involved. And while there are games like blackjack, which
when played with
proper
blackjack strategy give the player a great
deal of skill to work with as well, the fact of the matter
is that the majority of gamblers like playing slot
machines and other games of leisure.
In fact, the survey showed - contrary to common belief,
- most internet
gamblers like to play for the leisure and entertainment
aspects more so than the prospects of winning money. This
helps to explain the popularity of slot machines, even
though slots are widely known to return a higher Casinos
edge than other games.
According to the statistics
conjured from the survey, those players who reported to
either win more money, lose less money and/or both were
typically male, gambled for financial reasons (rather than
entertainment or relaxation), and did not chase after
their losses. A correlation was further shown linking
females with just the opposite traits. Considering the
average internet gambler is female (so the survey says),
and that females tend to gamble more for entertainment and
fun than for winning, not to mention the fact they
typically chase after losses more so than men, the
conclusion that men tend to win more and lose less money
is a reasonable one.
What is the lesson to be learned from all
this? It does not pay to chase after losses. The survey
could not rule out the fact that the only factor
influencing one's winnings or losses could be this alone,
rather than a combination of chasing after losses and
gambling for recreational purposes. And since it has been
known since time immemorial that chasing after losses only
leads to more losses, the verdict is clear once again
folks. By all means, do not chase after your losses!
