Gambling Tip of the Month:  Spanish 21 - The Rules and Differences of Blackjack

If you are a fan of blackjack, you might have noticed that the game of Spanish 21 looks very similar to standard blackjack.  Many players have played Spanish 21, not ever realizing the differences in the rules, although there are two markedly distinct differences which can make a large impact when using a basic blackjack strategy.  In other words, if you use standard blackjack strategy for Spanish 21, you will not be helping yourself as much as you would if you were to use basic strategy designed specifically for Spanish 21.  While both games have practically the same structures and objective, a big difference in setup is that Spanish 21 takes all of the tens (not Face cards) out of the game.  In regards to playing strategy, this definitely mixes things up, and can change the course of a players action on their hand.  Another difference, though not as large as the absence of tens, is that players still get paid 3 to 2 for a natural 21, even if the dealer has a blackjack also.  Aside from these two rules, there are some smaller differences in the form of perks that come with Spanish 21, such as letting players double down on two or more cards, continued splitting up to four times after a split, bonus payouts on various hand combinations of twenty-one, and the big bonus of a 50:1 payout for getting a suited triple seven when the dealer is also showing a 7.  So, if you are wondering if Spanish 21 has just as good odds as standard blackjack when using the basic blackjack strategy, the answer is essentially yes.  However, players will need to employ the basic strategy designed specifically for Spanish 21, which is simply a task of memorizing different actions in different scenarios like in the basic blackjack strategy.  With a disciplined basic Spanish 21 strategy, players can get the Casino Edge down below .8%.
