Loose, Tight, Passive and Aggressive Online Poker Players

Aside from being described as card sharks, newbies, suckers, bluffers (and a whole assortment of other names), poker players are generally ascribed as being either passive or aggressive players, and tight or loose.  Keeping this in mind when playing by one's own strategy is an excellent approach in helping players to gauge the most appropriate action at the poker table, which includes when and when not to bluff and calling other players bluffs.

When players are said to be either tight or loose, this pertains to the rate in which someone plays their hands. If someone is said to be tight, this means they play fewer hands than normal, and will likely fold early in the game.  Loose players, on the contrary, tend to see more hands through to the end of the game.

When poker players are said to be either aggressive or passive, this pertains to the way in which players will bet on their hands.  Passive players are not inclined to bet, but are rather more suited to call and check during betting rounds.  Aggressive players, on the other hand, are more inclined to bet and raise their hands, and are less likely to call or check.

In terms of referring to the poker tables as tight, loose, passive and aggressive, this means that one of the aforementioned types of players predominately makes up that table.  The easiest tables (suited for beginners) are those that are generally loose and passive.  Beginning players tend to play too many weak hands (loose), and when they do have a strong hand, they do not raise and bet as much as they should.  Although sharks will sometimes seek these players out to call their bluffs and/or ignorance, beginners should seek these games out while being weary of the sharks and not to fall victim to the style of aggressive play just mentioned (being somewhat of a shark in their own right).

As for tight and aggressive poker tables, these are definitely more suited to experienced players, and should be the style of poker that all players should strive for.  These tables see more players folding their hands early on in the game, and betting strong to build the pot up when holding strong cards.
