Free Online Poker Tip - Seating Position at the Poker Table

Playing a great game of poker requires more than just knowing how to read and use bluffs. Besides the more obvious skill of knowing the cards and rules as if  they were the back of one's hand, a great poker player also knows the advantages and disadvantages of seating position, and how to incorporate that aspect into their own playing strategy.  In order to understand seating position, players split them up into four sections - Early, middle, late and the blinds.

Being in the the position of the large and small blinds offers a variety of hands that players can see though late in the game.  Although costing a player more funds to enter the game, the blinds offer the best advantage in terms of position since they are last to act before the Flop.  However, it is statistically better to fold when these positions are confronted with a raise (unless holding a high hand).  The reason being is that after the Flop, these hands will be in early position, and will need a very strong hand if they seek to stay in the game.

Late position is normally defined as the last two players to act before the blinds.  This position affords players to bet on a greater amount of hands since they are able to see the actions of all the players before them.

The middle position is normally defined as the next three players to act after the early position (explained next).  These positions do not offer much hope for playing a weak hand, although they do offer a better advantage on weak hands than the early position.

As for the early position, this is normally defined as the first three players to act after the seats posting blinds have acted at a ten-person table.  When a poker player is in this position, they should only play strong hands, for there are several players to act after them, who will likely raise.

Knowing one's position at the poker table, and how that will play a part later on in the game is a very important aspect always worth considering, and should dictate many actions at the table, even when one decides to take a break and return to their seat.  Certain hands may be okay to hold onto later if the seating position is good and other factors are in one's favor, while the same hand should be folded early on when sitting in early position.
