Dealing With the Pressure of Betting

Dealing with pressure can be a very difficult mental task, especially when large amounts of money are on the line.  This is something that is not addressed very often, but should be considering that pressure is something most gamblers are going to have to deal with at some point in time.  Even gambling small amounts of money can create a degree of pressure that we are not normally used to coping with.  The fact that one is taking a risk is all that it takes to build up some anticipation and worry.  Depending on how badly one fears losing their money, the pressure will be more or less for each gambler.

As such, the very first thing anyone needs to do before stepping foot in the casino or going online, is to do some mental work.  This entails telling yourself that the money you are gambling with is a powerless object that comes and goes.  It is not something that will buy you that new coat for the winter.  It is not something, that if lost, will put you out for the month.  Besides, you should not be gambling with money you cannot afford to lose anyways.  If you are, there is no way to avoid the fear of losing it all and the pressure to turn it into something big.

If you are honest with yourself and know that you have some money you can afford to gamble with, you will find it much easier to not put great stock and importance in the money you are spending, which brings up another point.  At the least, look at gambling as a form of entertainment - something which you must spend money to receive.  Not only will you have a better time during the course of your betting session, if you happen to lose, it will be time well spent.  If you find that you cannot enjoy yourself, no matter how much you tell yourself to, gambling is probably not for you.  There is no reason to constantly increase one's heart rate if it can be avoided.

Another way of dealing with fear, is to understand that gambling cannot be predicted.  Just like in life, we are tempted to fear the unknown.  However, if we exercise confidence and a little faith, we know that no matter what happens, we are going to be alright.  Telling yourself this before and while you are gambling is a very powerful tool that will essentially eliminate all worry, fear and misguided concern that you would otherwise be creating only for yourself.
