Mixing Gambling and Drinking in the Casino

We have all heard the admonition of not to drink while gambling money.  But, what exactly does that mean?  If you are like myself, having a few drinks while gambling is enjoyable and helps facilitate more relaxation and fun.  I personally want to have something to drink when I am sitting down at the slot machines.  My experience is that I am still able to walk away with extra money in my pocket while having a little bit of a buzz - which brings up a good point.

The admonition to not mix drinking and gambling should be more specific and say "do not drink more than you can handle" when betting with money.  As responsible adults, if we cannot control our drinking, then we should not be gambling to begin with.

A good rule of thumb to follow is to limit yourself to a certain number of drinks in a specific time frame that you know will not take you beyond your self-control point.  Even if the cocktail waitress offers you more free drinks (which they always will), know when to decline.  If you set your limit ahead of time, you will not feel pressured in any way.  When you are ready for your next drink, all you have to do is ask.

A good limit to start off with is one drink per hour for the first two hours, and then one drink every two hours after that.  Depending on how long you plan to gamble, three drinks paced over three hours should be acceptable and not cloud your judgment.  And if you are a diehard bettor and plan to spend at least five hours gambling at once, do not go over four drinks.

Of course, everyone has different tolerances to alcohol.  If you have to limit yourself to two drinks in five hours do it.  The bottom line is to always play it safe and to always stick to your drink limit at all times....that is unless, of course, you overestimated your tolerance level to begin with.
