Online Casino Conditions >>> Craps Tips >>> The Skinny on Proposition Bets

For those players who are even slightly intimidated by the mass of bets on the craps table layout, the following words should serve as a sigh of relief.  We all know that a craps table, as well as the activity at a craps table can be slightly overwhelming to a new gambler.  There are at least three casino personnel standing around the table, which is usually bombarded by a crowd of players as well as well (especially when the table is hot).  And while this atmosphere can serve as a very exciting time, it can be intimidating as well as tempting to make rash bets.

There are really only a few bets a gambler should make at a craps table.  The bulk of the other bets on the table are called proposition bets (also called sucker bets) and come with a Casino Advantage that is not worth putting money down for.  Even the Field bet is not the smartest wager world, returning a Casino Edge of 2.77%.  Yet this is a bet that many craps players like to make - largely because the the bet layout on the craps table puts the Field Bet right in front of the bettors.  Furthermore, it is decided on every dice roll, which can tally up losses very quick.

Another bet that is very easy to make, but which also has below average odds, is the Big 6 and 8 Bet.  Located in the front corner of the table, one cannot miss the big letters of this proposition bet, which has a whopping House Edge of nearly 9.1%.  This bet is such a rip-off that it is actually banned from craps tables in Atlantic City casinos.

The other proposition bets at the craps table include Horn Bets, Hardways, Any Craps, and Any Seven, which are all grouped together in a box smack dead in the center of the table layout.  Of course, since these bets have horrible odds of winning, they are going to pay out more than other bets at the table.  This is the rub for many craps players - the temptation of winning it big on a single dice roll.  If you like to take your chances every so often, and can afford to do so, then by all means have at a proposition bet every now and then.  Just keep in mind the Casino Advantage is going to range from 9.1% to 16.7%, depending on the type of proposition bet made.

For those gamblers who are easily swayed by the encouragement of others, do not be fooled by an outspoken craps stickman, who will very likely tempt you to make quick outcome wagers or any of the proposition bets for a big payout.  It is your responsibility to be aware at all times, and above all, to remain patient and calm.  The energy of the craps table can be overwhelming at times, and many beginning players get swept off of their feet.  Rather, stick to the craps strategies discussed here at Online Casino Conditions.  Begin with the simplest strategy (Pass Line bets and backing odds), slowly progressing your way up to more and more complex strategies.
