The potential for new casino construction on the
front of the global gambling scene is stewing in the United Kingdom, where the
prospects of a casino as part of a leisure complex and new stadium for one of
UK's most popular football clubs is in the air.
Peterborough England's soccer sensation,
Peterborough United Posh, could become a strong bargaining tool in getting a new
casino built on the outskirts of the club's home city, Peterborough. The club's
new chairman, Darragh MacAnthony, has made it known that he not only desires to
acquire the club for himself, but seeks to build a 30,000 seat stadium for
hosting Posh's home matches. Additionally, he believes it would be a lucrative
and worthwhile venture to develop a leisure complex of sorts, that would not
only be home to the stadium, but also to a casino that could be covered under
the recently enacted UK Gambling Bill.
The Peterborough City Council is in full support of
the measure, but will be at the mercy of the UK Casino Advisory Board. The
Council is currently waiting for the Board to give their final decision on
whether or not they will even be permitted to have a casino under the regulatory
framework of the new laws, at which time, if the measure is approved, the
project would begin to be fleshed out further.
As for the Posh, their main objective is to get a
new stadium, which would relocate them from London Road, where they have been
playing for over the past ten years. Doing so would elevate their status as a
premier UK Football club - something which they have been seeking for several
years. In the meantime, the Posh website continues to impress fans with a
comprehensive offering of club news, not to mention the recently added access to
online sports betting sites, poker and casino games. Obviously there is
something to be said about Posh's contribution to the betting industry in the
UK, which the Casino Advisory Board will very likely consider when coming to a
consensus regarding a Peterborough Casino.
