Bwin, formerly known as Bet and Win, is the latest online
sports gambling website besieged by governmental authorities resulting in the
arrest of their Chief Executive Officers. It has been little over a week ago
since CEO's of Bwin, Manfred Bodner and Norbert Teufelberger, were detained by
French authorities and locked in jail. Having been released this last Thursday,
the two prominent online gambling execs are now speaking out about the
situation, and are doing so in a very outspoken and audible way, if you will.
Issuing a press conference under
the guidance of their attorney's, the men brought attention to the increasing
number of state-run gambling monopolies breaking Article 49 of the European
Commission Treaty, including Germany, Austria and France. Thomas Talos - the
duo's legal representation - cited that nothing is being done to stop them,
while plans to continue growing monopolistic control over the casino gambling
industry in each respective county are currently underway.
Upon being asked what their
detainment was like, Bodner and Teufelberger responded that in addition to being
subjected to "squalid conditions", the inconsistent manner in which France's
legal process took place was an alarming site for them. Teufelberger went on to
say that the speed in which the European Commission responded to the arrests and
filed subsequent proceedings against France was quite reassuring. After their
release on Thursday, the men were given a guarantee by Austrian authorities (Bwin
is based in Austria, where both men reside as well) that no legal proceedings
would be brought against them. Both men will be back in France in November to
hear their charges and proceed further in the legal process.
