August marked the largest jump in Las Vegas
attendance figures since February of this year. In fact, August was the first
month in several consecutive months for which attendance did not drop from the
same time period last year. Due in large part to an increase in conventions and
tradeshows during August, and not necessarily the casinos, the Las Vegas
Convention and Visitors Authority nonetheless said that August saw a 2.7%
increase compared to August of 2005. That percentage translated into over 3.3
million visitors, which is the most turnout Las Vegas has ever seen in any
August.
With the previous three months combining for a
total attendance drop of 3.4%, August brought things back on track, and
September hopefully pushed attendance levels up even more. This is quite likely,
for many of the aforementioned conventions bleed into and take place in
September. In August alone, there was an estimated 606,695 convention
participants, which was over a 50% increase. Although there were not as many
attendees at the anticipated Online Casino Affiliate Convention due to legal
concerns, the unexpected rescheduling of the Men's Apparel Guild trade show to
take place in August brought an additional 105,000 convention delegates.
With hotel occupancy, airline travel and automobile
traffic all increasing as well, Las Vegas is not hurting as bad as some analysts
thought they would because of the opening of a new luxury casino front in Asia.
The latter of these, however, has been more of a nuisance than a blessed sign of
economic strength. Nearly 100,000 vehicles were on the major Las Vegas highways
leading to the Strip, while a recorded 46,684 automobiles were tallied traveling
on Interstate 15 alone. Most of the casinos have been taking steps to better
traffic flows by building additional parking lots and pedestrian bridges, while
many of the new casino developments are implementing measures to handle an
overall increase in attendance, which the las Vegas Visitors and Convention
Authority does not seem to be minding at all.
