Online Gambling Posters Raise
Objection
Casino Conditions StaffAn
online gambling advertising campaign released by
Victor Chandler has evoked complaints from The
Methodist Church, who have likened the poster ads as
vehicles to encourage reckless drinking while
betting online.
The posters show famed comedian, Rowland Rivron, in various setting with his
laptop gambling at what is presumably Victor Chandler's online casino and
sportsbook. One of these settings happens to be inside a bar, showing
Rowland holding an alcoholic drink.
Victor Chandler addressed the concerns from the church, stating that it was
not their intention to blur the line between drinking and gambling at online
casinos. They brought into light the fact that Rowland was also shown in
many other locations not necessarily directly associated with drinking alcoholic
beverages. For instance, Rowland can be seen sitting in a barber's chair,
a bus, on a boat in a peaceful lake, and sitting up in bed.
The Advertising Standards Authority did not think that Victor Chandler was in
the wrong either. They dismissed the church's complaints and backed
Chandler's defense that the intention of the advertising campaign was simply to
show that people could gamble in an online casino from numerous places, and did
not have to be confined to their home computer.
