The
world-famous online poker room,
Party Poker,
is gearing up for a UK-wide broadcast of the Party Poker Premiere League
tournament, which was previously filmed in February and March of this year. The
airing is scheduled for May 22 on Channel 4, and promises to be an entertaining
round of poker action amongst some of the circuits top pro players. The final
table was seated by twelve well-known professional players, including celebrity
player, Phil Hellmuth. The total prize pool was for $500,000, consisting of
$20,000 buy-ins from each player and a $260,000 add-in by Party Poker.
Although the
results of the tournament have already been posted, the entertainment factor is
certainly worth a watch. David "Devilfish" Ulliot, who was eliminated early on
in the game, said the game offers an exciting dose to the world of Reality TV.
Ulliot likened it as a "Poker Big Brother" that will set a new standard for
televised poker games. Certainly, with all the head's up action at the table,
there was an element of dramatized showdown. After playing six times in
preliminary rounds, the top four players moved to the final table. Four
remaining players competed in two head's up rounds, thus filling the last two
seats at the final table.
The two heads-up
matches went down between Liz Lieu and Kenna James (Lieu winning out) and Vicky
Coren and Andrew Black (Coren winning out). The four top player were Phil
Hellmuth, Eddy Scharf, Ian Frazer and Juha Helppi, who turned up the action
several notches by going on a string of eliminations, beginning with Frazer. The
final heads-up was between Helppi and Scharf, who moved all-in with a suited
5-6. Helppi was holding an unsuited Ace-2, which made it through to the end.
UK residents will
get the full viewing experience by tuning in on May 22. However, Party Poker has
teamed up with the online sportsbook, Matchroom Sport, to give a sneak preview
of tournament footage at Matchroom's poker site. Party Poker is a popular brand
of Party Gaming, who also manages an online casino, bingo room, backgammon site
and sports betting site.
