It may sound like the newest technology to surface
from online casinos and internet betting, but this type of "mobile
gambling" does not involve mobile cell phones and downloading online casino
software. Rather, the "mobile gambling" referred to here is the latest
land-based innovation to hit Las Vegas casinos, made possible by recent
legislation in the state of Nevada.
The way it works is that visitors to Las Vegas
casinos and casino resorts can use hand-held devices to link up to a wireless
gaming server that lets bettors place real money bets at classic gambling games
offered by the casino on their very own lobby floor. The catch is that the
devices can only be used in public areas of the casino and resort, such as
restaurants and poolside.
The latest casino operator/owner to announce they
will be giving the technology a try is the Sands Corporation, who is one of
America's (and the world's) leading casino and gaming operators. Las Vegas
Sands management recently announced they are going to offer the handheld devices
at one of their most famous casinos - The Venetian Resort. This would make
the Venetian Casino the first to offer the devices, which were only recently
accepted by lawmakers.
Cantor Gaming - a gaming technology subsidiary of
the Cantor Fitzgerald Group in New York City - was the first company to be given
a green light in developing the hand-held devices, which will offer classic
casino games like roulette and blackjack at the very least. They are
essentially done developing the devices, which visitors to Venetian Casino
Resort will be seeing very soon.
It is expected the devices will be showing up in
several casinos on the strip, with mobile gambling devices developed by a
variety of well-known casino gaming machine manufacturers, such as IGT, Diamond
I Inc., and Shuffle Master.
