As the casino industry booms in true Vegas
proportions at Macau, the young
and able of China's higher education business programs are catching on to the
huge potential of future financial stability and skyrocketing
career growth. One Chinese student by the name of Cathy Lui, has been swayed by
the temptation of Macau's immense burst in casino resorts, and has turned from
her parent's profession of the medical field to jump headfirst into gaming
management at the University of Macau.
One thing is for sure - It does not seem
to be a bad bet on her part, given ninety percent of the students who graduate
from UM's gaming management program receive jobs immediately upon graduation. Part of what is proving so helpful about the school's gaming and casino
degree is its simultaneous relationship with the power house of gambling
and casino resorts itself - Las Vegas.
The University of Nevada has been hosting
students from various countries abroad, which have their own growing casino markets
- Macau being the
most prominent of these. As part of this program, thirty-five Chinese students were
recently greeted by the Las
Vegas' International Gaming Institute and given twenty-five hours of casino
specified education over the course of a two week stay. The most valuable
part was their hands-on experience, which essentially was an opportunity to
witness everything they had previously been learning at internationally renowned resort casinos.
Some of the most popular and beneficial topics covered were hotel operations,
slot operations, food and beverage, and tourism and convention management - all of
which are essential in running successful large casino resorts that draw more
that just the career gambler.
The latest objective for Macau to accomplish is being
able to draw a more pleasure and tourist driven crowd, thereby being bale to
reap the huge percentage of non-gaming revenue that Las Vegas casinos enjoy. One
Chinese student made the astute observation that that was the difference between
Macau gamblers and Las Vegas gamblers. In Las Vegas casinos, the gamblers are
relaxed and social while in Macau they are still disproportionately serious
career gamblers.
