It appears that the all-in-one online betting site,
Betfair, will be the presenting sponsor of the World Series of Poker Europe over
the course of the next five years. Harrah's License Company LLC - an affiliate
of Harrah's Entertainment and owner of the WSOP brand - recently announced via a
press release they have executed a letter of intent to form the partnership with
Betfair, in response to the upcoming inaugural WSOP European poker tournament in
September. As part of the sponsorship package, Betfair will be promoting WSOP
Europe on their online betting portals throughout the year.
While the alliance is non-binding, at this stage in
the game it looks certain the two gaming giants will be sleeping together. WSOP
Commissioner, Jeffrey Pollack, said in the press release that Befair's style and
superb branding (especially in Europe) is complementary to the world class poker
and entertainment offering that is synonymous with WSOP. Pollack went on to say
that the partnership will do well to launch WSOP Europe on a prestigious and
authentic note - a note that will likely reverberate as the most important poker
tournament other than Vegas.
When the letter of intent is "upgraded" with an
execution of a definitive agreement, the alliance between WSOP and Betfair will
be the largest of its kind between a dedicated online gambling gambling company
(Betfair offers bets on sports and horses, online casino games and poker) and a
land-based gaming operator (Harrah's is the largest casino operator in the
world). Betfair CEO, David Yu, was nothing short of elated to have nabbed the
sponsorship package. Yu referred to it as a historic deal - one in which Betfair
is honored to be apart of.
Pollack and a senior spokesperson for Betfair will
be formally announcing their affiliation at the WSOP in Las Vegas. Come
September 6-16, WSOP Europe will hit the casinos - Three casinos to be exact.
London Clubs International will have the honor of hosting the tournament, with
action taking place at Fifty in St. James, The Sportsman at Marble Arch and
Casino at the Empire in famed Leicester Square.
