Echoing Antigua and
Barbuda's endorsement and backing of the Internet Gambling Regulation and
Enforcement Act, the Conference of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) has made a
formal pledge of support for Congressman Barney Frank's efforts to regulate
online gambling in the U.S. Amidst the growing international resentment against
the U.S. bullying tactics to blockade online sports betting, poker rooms and
casinos, CARICOM's support of the Internet Gambling Regulation and Enforcement
is just another testament to the sound provisions in this piece of badly needed
legislation.
The fifteen Caribbean
countries who make up CARICOM openly expressed their gratitude to members of
Congress for supporting their battle against U.S. online gambling carve-outs
during a recent meeting in Barbados. Talks held during the meeting were
published in a press release, which included further discussion on the World
Trade Organization ruling in favor of Antigua and Barbuda, and how to pursue
their claim for compensation. Since the U.S. refuses to comply with its prior
commitment under WTO regulations, Antigua and many others are now demanding
their rightful claim from the U.S.
Adding even more fuel
to the fire is the Safe and Secure Internet Gambling Initiative being
spearheaded by Jeffrey Sandman. Speaking out about the endorsement by CARICOM,
Sandman said it is another signal from the international community that the U.S.
needs to readdress its stance on the regulation of online casinos and internet
betting sites. Sandman emphasized that the IGREA does not seek to overturn the
UIGEA. It simply sets out provisions in which State governments can use to
regulate online gambling if they so choose. The IGREA also puts into place
strict anti-fraud and problem gambling prevention measures, which are now being
successfully used in the UK.
