The YouTube and MySpace
for addicts, Addicted.com, recently issued a press release regarding their 24/7
online support center for recovering addicts. Dealing with a wide range of
addictive disorders, Addicted.com serves as resource center for both addicts and
family members of addicts. Although most addicts would agree that treatment is a
lifetime task, the website is designed to help addicts during the treatment
phase and get on the road to recovery.
The press release
referred to a panel of doctors and trained professionals who help to diagnose
and recommend treatment to members of the site. And while there were indeed a
list of doctors specializing in drug, sex and eating addiction, there did not
appear to be any specialists in the area of gambling addiction. To give them the
benefit of the doubt, there is indeed a resource center for gambling addicts, as
well as links to twelve-step programs, such as Gamblers Anonymous.
Much of the site is
dedicated to AddictedSpace. As you might guess, this part of Addicted.com
functions like MySpace, in that it facilitates members to meet one another,
create a personal profile, and especially in this case, support one another.
Indeed, it is important for any addict to meet new friends and positive
influences while on the road to recovery. One word of warning: If you are a
recovering addict (especially in the early phases), be certain you are receiving
professional help and/or are in a treatment program like Gamblers Anonymous.
Meeting other recovering addicts can be a recipe for danger, so be careful about
who you befriend.
In addition to
AddictedSpace, which appears to be an open and positive environment for sharing
stories and offering support, Addicted.com offers AddictedTube. Similar, but not
quite the same as YouTube, AddictedTube allows members to upload addicted
related videos. You might not see "This is Your Brain on Drugs", but you will
certainly see videos of members sharing stories, singing songs about addiction
and even some creative shorts.
If you find yourself
gambling in the online casino just a little longer each time, your stakes keep
getting higher or you are falling into debt because of your gambling habits, you
should seek professional help immediately. And you might just want to keep
Addicted.com in mind as a supplement to your recovery.
