In an effort to crack down on second hand smoke,
Ontario lawmakers passed the Smoke-Free Ontario Act back in June of last year.
With the bill not scheduled to go into action until May 31, 2006, some
businesses do not appear to be doing anything to facilitate enforcing the new
law. The Great Blue Heron Charity Casino is one such place that has many
anti-smokers wondering what the gambling operator plans to do with the Scugog
Island Gaming House.
Although the casino has set forth that a decision
on whether to comply with the new regulations or to close shop and move
elsewhere needs to be made, no word has surfaced on what that decision is going
to be. Right now, even casino employees are concerned about what may go
down. While the matter strikes chords of employment and lost business, the
overall concern seems to be one of health. Surprising to many, there is
great support for the Smoke-Free Ontario Act, which will undoubtedly do wonders
for public health. Any non-compliance to the bill would surely be
disappointing for all those who pushed to have it passed.
A decision will have to come soon - And the
majority of casino employees in Ontario are hoping the casino decides to enforce
the new law. Those who enjoy smoking while they gamble are simply going to
have to step outside and not force their dangerous habit upon others. The
Smoke-Free Ontario Act will also hold precedence in all enclosed public places
like clubs, restaurants, bars and arenas.
