The Ohkay Casino and Resort is the latest tribal
casino to go under investigation, following a million dollar plus jackpot won on
a penny slot machine. According to Jody Montoya of La Mesilla, she was playing a
penny slot machine at Ohkay Casino, when it registered a $1.6 million win.
However, when she brought casino personnel over to the machine in order to
verify the win, they informed her the slot had malfunctioned and that she had
actually won nothing after all. Montoya's Santa Fe lawyer, Tim Butler, says that
Montoya is demanding the casino pay her in full.
At the current time, the Tribal Gaming Commission
and slot machine manufacturer are investigating the case, after which and
depending on their ruling, Montoya says she will consider filing a lawsuit.
Butler claims that whether the machine malfunctioned or not, his client is
entitled to be paid in full.
Despite the fact that this particular penny slot
machine is only supposed to pay a maximum jackpot of $1,500, and that the
machine apparently did not even register a winning symbol combination, Montoya
believes the casino must take responsibility for the malfunction.
The Ohkay Casino Resort has maintained a solid
reputation within the tribal casino sector for several years now, and has served
as one of the most popular casinos and hotels in Northern New Mexico. Located in
the Sangre de Cristo mountain range of San Juan, Ohkay Casino is managed by the
San Juan Pueblo Indians.
The casino itself offers several gambling amenities,
including over 650 slot machines and several live blackjack tables. Offering a
lounge and restaurant buffet, the casino also accommodates travelers in the
adjacent Best Western Ohkay Casino Resort, which offers diverse lodgings,
including twenty-four extended suites.
