Isle of Capri has been very successful at running a
large number of casinos around the world. However,
it seems the company has had a bad string of luck in two
of their casinos, which can be directly blamed by this
years hurricane season. Their Mississippi Casino
was obviously destroyed by the effects of Hurricane
Katrina. However, even Capri's Bahamas casino
is beginning to go under, although it was not physically
destroyed by any hurricane. In this case, it seems
that hurricanes who like to keep the Bahamas in their
path have scared off tourists, which in turn, is
affecting the casino.
The world famous Bahamas casino, Isle of Capri, is
facing some hard times. Although it does not
look probable the Grand Bahamas will go without a
casino of some kind, there is a chance that Isle of
Capri could be no more if business does not pick up
and the Bahamas economy continues to struggle.
Capri manager, Eddie
Llambias made it known earlier in 2005 that unless
the Bahamas government steps in to help the casino
stay in business, it would be forced to shut down
its operations in the Bahamas and go elsewhere,
which is the last thing the Ministry of Tourism,
Obie Wilchcombe, would want to happen. With
unemployment up and tourism at a low, the economy is
dragging, and would be hit even harder is Isle of
Capri Casino was to stop generating tax revenue.
However, this is
precisely what Capri is saying will keep them from
operating in the green. Due to financial
challenges of their own, Capri has asked the
government to modify their taxation rates and help
Capri with more marketing and advertising. If
not, the casino will only be doing the Bahamas
government a favor.
Being that Grand
Bahamas has come to depend on the taxes generated
from Isle of Capri, Minister Wilchcombe reported
that the casino is likely to receive some of its
requests. As to exactly what this means, and
how much money was being considered, Wilchcombe did
not further elaborate. He did go on to say
that several investors were prepared to help
stabilize the casino if it continues to struggle.
