Some of the world's most premiere pari-mutuel pools
originate in Hong Kong. It would seem a perfect fit then to mix Las Vegas casino
gambling with Hong Kong horseracing. Well, this may very well be happening in
the near future if the Nevada Pari-Mutuel Association and the Hong Kong Jockey
Club could come to an agreement on how much to charge for the rights to
broadcast simulcast signals. If negotiations can be smoothed out, this would
mark the first time that overseas thoroughbred horseracing events were
broadcasted in Nevada casinos on a regular basis.
According to the Hong Kong Jockey Club, betting
pools comprised from their two distinct tracks can reach over $100 million in
bets. Allowing American bettors to enter these betting pools would not only mark
the first time that American and Chinese bets would be commingled into a single
pool, it would do wonders for the international horseracing industry at large.
Knowing this all too well is Las Vegas
Dissemination Co., who is the leading provider of simulcasts and horseracing
coverage of 85 racetracks in the U.S. to Las Vegas casinos. Las Vegas
Dissemination happens to also be the newly chosen partner of the Hong Kong
Jockey Club to serve as a simulcast vehicle for mixing American bets with the
overseas pools. The company says Foxwoods Casino has already signed up to
receive the simulcast, while other American racetracks and betting parlors have
shown interest in participating in the pools as well.
VP of Marketing for Las Vegas Dissemination,
Vincent Magliulo, said the current challenge will be in getting the Hong Kong
Jockey Club and the nevada Pari-Mutuel Association to agree on a price. Casinos
normally pay anywhere from 2% to 4% of all wagered bets in order to cover their
broadcasting rights of the races. Apparently, Hong Kong Jockey Club is asking
for 14% of all bets. And although all of Nevada's racebooks think the cost is
too high, including the Asia-friendly Wynn Resort, they all agree that Hong Kong
offers some of the most premiere horseracing in the world, including larger
wagering pools than those of American races.
