Casino News Article of the Month: State of
the Online Gambling Industry in 2007
As we start of the month of April in the year 2007, the online casino industry
finds itself in a position it has been familiar with since the beginning of its
existence. One could say from an outside perspective that this position is one
of uncertainty. Someone who is exploring online gambling options for the first
time is no doubt taking in the news of online poker rooms and casinos shutting
their doors to U.S. players, arrests of gaming company CEO's and the widely
publicized Neteller crisis. These players may have even already been denied
deposits while searching for a U.S. friendly online casino to open an account
with. Understandably, a player such as this would be influenced to view the
future of the internet gaming industry as being unstable and uncertain. However,
from the viewpoint of those of us who have been working within the industry
since its early beginnings, the online gambling industry has never looked more
promising. Never before has such a widespread movement seeking to establish
standardized governmental online gaming regulations taken place. With the United
Kingdom passing unprecedented, modernized legislation to regulate online betting
and several other countries looking to do the same, everything else is just a
minor setback. Besides the fact that U.S. gamblers can still open accounts at
online casinos and poker rooms (they just have to keep trying and know where to
look), the likelihood of the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act getting
overturned is greater than previously thought. Largely fueled by a shifting in
the Congressional majority, not only are there talks and tangible plans to
undertake a legitimate and proper study on how to regulate online gambling,
powerful Senators like Barney Frank are talking about repealing the UIGEA. The
bottom line right now is that in the face of seemingly hard times, the online
casino industry has found a way around the temporary obstacles, and remains as
strong as ever.
