A six hundred and fifty million dollar casino
proposed for the Limerick, Pennsylvania area is meeting some opposition.
The state's gaming commission has received letters
from members of the school board citing the different reasons that they feel it
is unnecessary they grant the casino a license, although there are other members
of the school board who feel that it is out of their area of control and should
be a matter for the borough itself to be dealing with.
In response to this sentiment of lack of relevance,
members argue that it is their responsibility to speak out on their aversion to
the casino no matter what.
" I think we should take every opportunity to keep
on saying that, even if we’re saying it from the deck of a sinking ship... I do
not think it’s a good thing for this school district, and I do not see how
having a casino in Limerick can have any positive value for the borough", said
one member.
But in their search for a valid reason to dispute
the building of the casino, the school board members found a correlation between
themselves, the casino, and a nearby power plant.
"I think we should ask them one pointed question,
God forbid there’s a nuclear accident at that power plant. ‘Who are we going to
evacuate first? The senior citizens, the children or the people in the casino?
After all, our evacuation plan, for a school district without busing, means a
private bus company is going to have come into a hot zone to take our children
out."
It is with this connection the school board has
found a valid reason to protesting the building of the casino.
