Online Casino Conditions >>> Baccarat Tips >>> Dealing With the Shoe at the Baccarat Table

If you desire to play baccarat in a land-based casino, you should know ahead of time how to deal with the shoe.  Let me explain:  In typical U.S. casinos, baccarat is played as a water-down adaptation of the European version called Baccarat en Banque, which has the casino serve as the Bank for all hands.  Also called Nevada Baccarat, this version is actually now being played in Europe. It is called Punto Banco.

In the common version of baccarat, the shoe is rotated from player to player, which gives each player the opportunity to serve as the Bank.  In actuality though, the player is only serving as the dealer, for the casino always serves as the Bank.  This is a good perk for players who do not have excessively sized bankrolls.  The reason is that baccarat usually has large table stake minimums to begin with.  And when a player has to truly serve as the banker, their bankroll must be large enough to cover all the bets at the table.  Obviously this can get into the thousands.  So when the shoe comes around to you, don't panic.  You don't even have to take it if you are not comfortable.  In that case, it would simply rotate to the next player who has the option of dealing or passing also.  If the shoe gets all the way back to the caller then it is he who will deal the hands.

If you choose to deal, you should do so in the following manner:  Pay attention to the caller, who will inform you to initiate dealing, which is done by sliding a face-down card to the caller and a face down card under the corner of the shoe, which will be the Bank Hand.  The third card is slid face-down to the caller, (completing the Player Hand) and the fourth card is put under the corner of the shoe, completing the Bank Hand.  During the whole card-dealing process, take your time and do not look at the cards.  After both hands are dealt, the caller will give the bettor seated at the table who has made the highest bet on the Player Hand the actual two cards of the Player Hand.  This player will turn over the cards, after which the caller will inform you to flip the cards of the Bank Hand.  After you have done so, slide them over to the caller, who will advise you on whether to deal more cards to both hands.

That is essentially all there is to dealing with a baccarat shoe in a casino.  Just remember that you have the option of passing it up until you feel comfortable doing so.  Pay attention to how other players ahead of you handle the shoe, and simply follow suit in a slow and methodical manner.  Another point to remember is that you are expected to bet on the Bank Hand when you are dealing, although it is not mandatory.  However, if you know that you will be betting on the Player Hand, it is customary to pass the shoe to the next player.  After accepting the shoe, it does not rotate until a Player Hand wins.
